Cave Photography

Exploring the Underworld with my camera began as a pursuit to learn of how people lived and utilized sacred spaces in the past. As an archaeologist I was intrigued by studying both dry and wet caves, however, after realizing that most of the very ancient past was inundated I began to prepare my education to become a cavern diver and today I am explore these dark worlds both for the passion to learn and to capture the beauty below.

Cavern Explorer

I am a certified cavern diver with the N.A.C.D. and have been diving Cenotes and Caves for over a decade. My preferred diving rig is a. Side Mount system that provides redundancy in these complex contexts. I began shooting a Sony Nex5 camera in the 2010s as most of my work was documentary in nature. However this has changed in the present and I have elected to shoot mostly film with my Nikonos V camera and the photos you are seeing in these page are all from this analog system. I love the process of photography and in the underworld it takes on a whole different meaning.

I have been diving and imaging throughout Quintana Roo and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. I have also explored flooded caves in Madagascar. Outside of caves I have dived in numerous sites throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Colombia and Uruguay. Although these were not caves, these dives were intended to document shipwrecks, submerged archeological sites and artworks. I am always looking toward the next adventure.
